Crafted in the 1890s, this H.C. Nelson open-back banjo is a quintessential example of the Chicago-style banjo era. Likely manufactured by the prominent J.B. Schall factory for Nelson’s Evanston-based shop, the instrument features a substantial 12-inch spun-over rim (often referred to as a "steel pot" due to its nickel-plated brass or "German silver" cladding over a wood core).
A hallmark of these Schall-influenced instruments is the distinctive "arrowhead" shaped metal heel plate and a sturdy bracket tension system, which provides a bright, "poppy" tone ideal for classic or old-time clawhammer styles.
