In 1983, the Martin M-36 stood as a distinctive unsung hero in the Martin lineup, characterized by its unique 0000-size body that paired the wide 16-inch lower bout of a Jumbo with the slim depth of a 000. This particular era of construction featured a solid Sitka spruce top paired with solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, easily identified by its elegant three-piece back design similar to the D-35.
The guitar was built for balance and versatility, utilizing a mahogany neck, an ebony fingerboard, and a rosewood bridge to produce a punchy, complex voice that excelled in both fingerstyle and studio recording. Because Martin had transitioned away from Brazilian rosewood by 1970, this 1983 model is a prime example of their high-quality use of Indian rosewood during a period when the M-36 was just beginning to establish its reputation for comfort and tonal clarity.
